- On-Line Engineering Education with Emphasis on Application of Bloom’s Taxonomy

Bloom proposed the taxonomy of thinking skills. The thinking skills are defined at six levels, specified as Level 1 (Remembering), Level 2 (Understanding), Level 3 (Applying), Level 4 (Analysis), Level 5 (Evaluation) and Level 6 (Creating). The first three levels are generally classified as low order learning skills and next three levels are often referred as critical thinking/Higher order skills.
American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) [1] enlists that curriculum should be aligned to the specified Graduate Attributes. The alignment of Graduate Attributes mandates that the Teaching Learning Process be designed to be Outcome Based as enshrined in the objectives of Outcome Based Education (OBE).
The Washington Accord [2] and other National Protocols like National Board of Accreditation (NBA) [3] have stressed the need for Outcome Based Education in Engineering spectrum. The OBE stipulates that the students after passing out from the selected programme, will be equipped with the outcomes stated for this programme. The OBE necessitates the implementation of all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy in the Teaching-Learning Process as applicable to Engineering education to achieve the resultant outcomes. The present System of teaching the courses using only the "Chalk and Talk" method does not afford enough time to implement all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. At the maximum, only the first three levels can be implemented. The teachers are finding it difficult to apply next three levels due to the paucity of time. As a result of this, the students are being denied exposure to Critical Thinking/ Higher order skills, thus adversely impacting the important outcomes.
It is imperative that the "Chalk and Talk" method of teaching be complimented with On-line Engineering Education. The Online Engineering education coupled with Chalk and Talk method will allow the implementation of all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy in the Engineering curriculum thus fulfilling the objectives of OBE can be possible.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has been developed by Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. The NIRF has been drafted to provide an Indian context to educational aspiration and needs for two categories of institutions viz category 'A' mainly research and category 'B' mainly teaching. The NIRF provides for ranking of institutions under five broad generic parameters namely: i)Teaching, Learning and Resources; ii) Research, Professional Practice and Collaborative Performance; iii) Graduation Outcomes; iv) Outreach and inclusively and v) Perception.
The importance of quality publications is highlighted in Research Publication metrics, which forms an important component of Research, Professional Practice and collaboration performance parameter. In Outcome Based Education, every faculty is required to contribute towards Research Publications. The institutions need to motivate the faculty to understand the importance of Research Publications in the context of National Institutional Ranking.
Towards this goal, we have developed a methodology called "Performance Based Incentive for Research Publications". The incentive provides financial benefits to faculty members an amount equal to 15% of their Basic Pay during four months viz. Nov/Dec and May/June of the current academic year. The four months are the semester break months. The Performance Based Incentive is linked to both the quality and number of publications. The quality of publications is in relation to publications indexed in Scopus, Web of Science and Google scholar. The publications indexed in Scopus get maximum benefits of 15% of basic pay. The benefit gets decreased for publications indexed in Web of Sciences and Google Scholar in that order.
The application of Performance Based Incentive at author's college has resulted in increase in the number of publications which has a bearing on getting better score in the National Institutional Ranking.

Teacher Centred learning has been the traditional method of teaching. In this method of teaching, the Learning tends to be passive and the learners play little part in the learning process. The information flow is one-way with insufficient interaction with students in the Class Room. To overcome a number of shortcomings observed in the Teacher –Centred Learning, the focus of instruction needs to be shifted from Teacher –Centred Learning to Student-Centred Learning. There are a number of approaches to implement Student-Centred Learning in the curriculum. We have chosen Active Learning Strategies as an Instructional approach to implement Student-Centred Learning at MLR Institute of Technology-Hyderabad. As a first step, we have selected the five Active Learning Strategies to implement:1) Flipped Class Room 2) Think-Aloud- Pair-Problem-Solving (TAPPS) 3) In-Class Teams 4) Group writing Assignments and 5) Collaborative Learning. Ten IUCEE-IIEECP certified faculty have been designated as mentors to monitor the implementation process for the smooth and effective conduct of Active Learning Strategies. The Active Learning Reports are compiled in the specified template by the faculty after completion of the activity every month. The reports are evaluated by the mentors to assess their compliance vis-a-vis the requirements stipulated in the SOPs. Based on the outcome of assessments, the faculty are provided the guidance/training to overcome the observed deficiencies. The faculty in the college have started the implementation of Active Learning Strategies w.e.f July 2017. The students have responded positively to this Active Learning Pedagogy.Keywords
